Gerhard Bauer

Gerhard Bauer has developed clinical grade stem cell gene therapy transduction and processing procedures while at the University of Southern California (USC), leading to the cure of ADA deficient SCID.  He has designed and implemented GMP facilities for cellular and gene therapy (USC, Washington University, UC, Davis).  As an expert in the field, over the last 15 years, he has been asked to help with the design, engineering, and construction of several other pioneering academic and industry GMP facilities for cell and gene therapies. Gerhard has also been editor in chief of the journal Molecular Therapy – Methods and Clinical Development.

Gerhard was born in Austria and attended college and medical school in Vienna.  He moved to the US in the late 1980s to run the HIV research laboratory at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.  He later accepted a job at The Johns Hopkins University to start the development of stem cell gene therapy for HIV.

For 30+ years Gerhard has been associated with cell and gene therapy development with an emphasis on the design and engineering of GMP facilities.  He has been the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Molecular Therapy – Methods and Clinical Development.
